Talbot Baines Reed was a popular and prolific writer of boy's fiction in the mid to late nineteenth century. He established a genre of school stories that endured into the mid-twentieth century. Many of his stories were printed in the "Boy's Own Paper," a popular periodical of the time.

The book collects many of Reed's stories into one volume, including several of the "Parkhurst" stories. Also included are "Boys We Have Known," with stories like "The Sneak," "The Sulky Boy," and "The Untidy Boy." A section on boys of English history tells stories of boys who overcame or made it big, and a short section of random stories of boys is included at the end.
